I study the taxonomy and life history of gall midges of Aizoaceae in South Africa, in particular those associated with the genera Drosanthemum and Malephora. The Aizoaceae form a unique, species-rich component of the Greater Cape Floristic Region, with more than 1,500 species and very high endemism rates. Although it has recently been demonstrated that these plants support a large number of gall-inducing species, this rich insect fauna has not been studied so far. I survey Aizoaceae in the succulent Karoo and Namaqualand, where they are most diverse, and have so far found dozens of gall-midge species, all new to science.
