Ronen Raz

I am a visual artist and an amateur entomologist. As a boy I was fascinated by the representation of wildlife in models and dioramas exhibited in natural history museums; I practiced taxidermy and maintained an insect collection.  In fact, that was the beginning of my experimenting with ideas of form and content, shell and substance. My artwork is mostly made of processed and recycled leather, with a focus on body and structure, under the concept of creating something that is simultaneously animate and inanimate.

My tasks as the lab technician include maintenance of the cecidomyiid collection, in particular preparation of microscope slides of these delicate midges for morphological study, rearing of insects and plants for study in the lab and in the research greenhouse, and support for various graduate-student projects in the field and lab. I also take part in different activities of the entomological team that manages the big insect collection at the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History.
