My study focuses on taxonomy and ecology of caddisflies (Trichoptera) of the family Hydropsychidae in Israel's streams, with a focus on the larval stage. Hydropsychid larvae mostly inhabit high-quality running waters, whereas adults are terrestrial. Hydropsychidae have a wide distribution, and species differ by their tolerance to water pollution, making them major components of bioindicators that are used for bioassessment and monitoring of stream and river systems. Despite this, information about larval stages is scarce, and most of the knowledge on Israel's Hydropsychidae (as well as on others Trichoptera groups) is limited to the adult stage. As part of my research I sample mature larvae from streams in diverse ecological settings and different parts of Israel for taxonomic analysis using morphological and molecular methods. I aim to clarify the taxonomic status of Israeli species, associate between larvae and adults, and characterize hydropsichid habitats in the country. This information will enable us to incorporate this major group of bioindicators for the first time into assessment protocols of Israeli water systems.
